SECTION-A (READING) (10 MARKS)

01. Read the passage given below:

1. Globalisation is the way in which manufacturers and producers of different products or goods sell their products globally without any restrictions. It is a way to open businesses, improve technological growth, economy, etc, at the international level for all countries. It provides huge profits to the businessmen as they get low cost labour in poor countries easily. It provides big opportunities to companies to deal with the world-wide market.

2. Globalisation helps to consider the whole world as a single market. Traders are extending their areas of business by treating the world as a global village. Earlier till the 1990s, there was a restriction on importing certain items which were already manufactured in India like agricultural products, engineering goods, food items and toiletries.

However, during the 1990s', there was a pressure from the rich countries on the poor and developing countries to allow them to spread their businesses by opening their markets. In India, the globalisation and liberalisation process started in 1991.

3. Thereafter, globalisation brought about a major revolution in the Indian Market when multinational brands came to India and started delivering a wide range of quality products at cheap prices. The prices of good quality products came down because of the cut-throat competition in the market,

4. Globalization and liberalization of the businesses in India have flooded the market with quality foreign products but have affected the local Indian industries adversely, resulting in job losses to the poor and uneducated workers. Thus, though globalization has been a bonanza for he consumers, it has resulted in a loss to the small-scale Indian producers.

5. Moreover, globalization of trade in the agricultural sector has brought varieties of quality seeds which have disease resistant properties. However, it is not good for the poor Indian farmers because the new seeds and agricultural technologies are costly. It has also brought about a huge resolution in the employment sector by the spread of businesses like cottage, handloom, carpet, artisan carvings, ceramics, jewellery, glassware etc.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY 5 questions from the six given below.        1x5

02. Read the following excerpt from a report titled "Indian Cardamom'.

1. Cardamom, the Queen of all spices, has a history as old as the human race. It is the dried fruit of a herbaceous perennial plant. Warm humid climate, loamy soil rich in organic matter, distributed rainfall and special cultivation and processing methods all combine to make Indian Cardamom truly unique in aroma, flavour and size. Two types of Cardamom are produced in India.

2. The first type is the large one, which has not much significance as it is not traded in the market. It is cultivated in North-eastern area of the country. The second type is produced in the Southern states and these are traded in the market. These are mainly cultivated in Kerala, Tamil

Nadu and Karnataka. As per the market rules, only 7 mm quality was previously traded in exchanges, But later, it relaxed its norms, and now 6 mm quality is also traded in the exchanges.

3. The small variety, known for its exotic quality throughout the world. is now traded in India's commodity future exchanges. Traditional auction markets also exist for trading in small Cardamom in the country. Cardamom is an expensive spice, second only to saffron. It is often adulterated and there are many inferior substitutes from cardamom-related plants such as Siam cardamom, Nepal cardamom, Winged Java cardamom, etc. However, it is only Elettaria Cardamom which is the true cardamom. Indian Cardamom is known for two main varieties: Malabar Cardamom and Mysore cardamom. The Mysore variety contains levels of cineol and limonene and hence is more aromatic.

4. India was the world's largest producer and exporter of Cardamom till the 1980s. By 1990s Guatemala emerged as the leading producer and exporter of cardamom. The primary physical markets of Cardamom are Kumily, Vandenmedu, Thekkady, Puliyarmala in Kerala and Bodynaikkannur and Cumbam in Tamil Nadu. North India is the main market for Cardamom produced in the country. Colour, size and aroma are the major variables that shape Cardamom prices in the Indian market. Cardamom price formation in India is also influenced by the output in Guatemala as this country controls the global markets.

5. Kerala is the main producer of Cardamom and contributes up to 60% in total production. Karnataka produces around 25% Cardamom of the total production. Ooty is the main producer of Cardamom in Tamil Nadu and contributes around 10-15% of the total production. Besides India, Guatemala also produces around 2,200 tons cardamom. On the other hand, India produces nearly 1,000-2,000 tons Cardamom per year. Due to low quality of Cardamom from Guatemala, it remains available at cheaper rates. Moreover, Cardamom of Indian origin fetches $ 3-4 per kilogram higher rates than the ones from Guatemala.
